IEC 60688:2024 pdf download – Electrical measuring transducers for converting AC and DC electrical quantities to analogue or digital signals

IEC 60688:2024 pertains to transducers (TRD) with electrical inputs and outputs designed for measuring AC or DC electrical quantities. The output signal can be either analogue or digital.

This document is applicable to measuring transducers that convert electrical quantities such as:

  • current,
  • voltage,
  • active power,
  • reactive power,
  • power factor,
  • phase angle,
  • frequency,
  • harmonics or total harmonic distortion,
  • apparent power, and
  • DC power
    into an output signal.

The document applies under the following conditions:
a) when the fundamental frequency of the input(s) ranges from 0 Hz to 1,500 Hz,
b) to electrical measuring transducers that are part of a system measuring either electrical or non-electrical quantities,
c) to transducers intended for various applications, including telemetry and process control, within specified environments.

However, this document does not apply to:

  • instrument transformers conforming to IEC 61869 (all parts),
  • transmitters used in industrial process applications compliant with IEC 60770 (all parts),
  • power metering and monitoring devices (PMD) adhering to IEC 61557-12,
  • meters conforming to the IEC 62053 series,
  • handheld sensors,
  • residual current monitoring devices (RCMs) compliant with IEC 62020-1,
  • residual current detecting devices (RDC-DD) adhering to IEC 62955,
  • in-cable control and protection devices (IC-CPDs) compliant with IEC 62752,
  • modular residual current devices (MRCDs) conforming to IEC 60947-2:2016/AMD1:2019, Annex M.

Within the specified measuring range, the output signal is dependent on the measurand, and an auxiliary supply may be required.

The purpose of this document is to:

  • define terminology and concepts related to transducers primarily used in industry,
  • standardize the testing methods for evaluating transducer performance,
  • establish accuracy limits and output values for transducers.

IEC 60688:2024 supersedes the fourth edition published in 2021 and represents a technical revision. This edition includes significant technical updates compared to the previous one, including:
a) revisions to normative references,
b) updates to definitions,
c) changes in structure,
d) the addition of DC power measurement.
